Elbera’s Story

Transformed to Live, Lead, and Serve: Elbera Mfura

Elbera Mfura’s world shifted overnight: her father suffered a stroke and became bedridden, and her mother became the sole provider for their family of seven. As the oldest of five children, Elbera stepped into responsibility at 13 years old.

“I had to be strong, not only for myself but also for my younger siblings,” she says. “I understood that my behaviour would influence them.”

The hardship shaped her youth and primed her for a life of leadership. “The experience made me more mature, responsible, and resilient.”

Elbera’s first example of leadership was from her mom, whose encouragement built her confidence. “My mom always reminded me that I can achieve anything if I try and refuse to live in fear.” Over time, that grew into a passion for leading and caring for others.

And yet, Elbera felt directionless. “I often made quick decisions without seeking advice, and many of those choices led to negative results. I was also deeply addicted to social media, which influenced my thoughts and behaviours in unhealthy ways.” Though raised in a Christian home, she had not embraced her faith.

That changed on October 14, 2023.

“God opened my eyes and made me realize I needed a real relationship with Him. I understood I could not continue living the same way.” Following Jesus brought clarity and peace. She became more intentional and grounded in purpose.

Two years later, she learned about Trek and saw an opportunity to deepen both her faith and leadership. A scholarship made attendance possible, and on September 30, 2025, she traveled to Kurumbuka’s Leadership Hub in Kigali, Rwanda, beginning a 12-week journey of discipleship and leadership formation.

“Trek changed my life from the inside out,” she says. “God healed me in places I didn’t even realize were broken.”

Living in an intentional community with 20 other young adults, she engaged in daily devotions, leadership classes, practical skill development, adventure learning, and outreach projects. Through the experience, she gained structure, vision, and accountability for her leadership.

“I now see myself as a leader with purpose, rooted in faith, and ready to shine God’s light in my family, church, and community.”

Returning home was not without challenges. “My community was the same, but I was no longer the same person.” What sustained her were practices she formed during Trek: accountability, prayer and fasting, and a renewed commitment to God’s Word. “Instead of acting quickly, I now take time to pray and reflect. This helps me lead with wisdom and align my decisions with God’s purpose.”

Today, Elbera serves as a project manager at her church, helping coordinate community outreaches for families and children. “We don’t just provide material support,” she explains. “We remind people of their value; that they are loved, cared for, and supported. And we pray with them.”

Her dream is to help young people overcome fear and live boldly in their God-given purpose.

Looking ahead, she hopes to lead collaboratively, building teams that pursue meaningful change together. She wants her leadership to inspire growth, unity, and Christ-centered transformation in her community.

“Trek didn’t just change my perspective,” she reflects. “It transformed how I live, lead, and serve.”
